Premier League | Leicester come from behind to beat Spurs
2023-02-12 14:30Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of finishing in the Premier League's top four were dealt another blow as they were thrashed 4-1 at rampant Leicester City despite taking the lead on Saturday .
Goals from Nanpali Mendy , James Maddison , Clutch Iheanacho and Harvey Barnes gave Leicester the lead after Rodrygo Bentancur gave Spurs the lead City have won three consecutive victories in all competitions.
Tottenham came to the King Power Stadium looking to secure a four-game winning streak in last weekend's win over champions Manchester City and took an early advantage through Bentancur's close-range strike.
However, the hosts soon turned things around, with Mendy equalizing in the 23rd minute before Maddison scored his second goal in as many games to seal the comeback two minutes later to beat Spurs.
" I think things changed today after we scored, " said Tottenham assistant coach Christian Strini , who took over media duties from manager Antonio Conte returning from surgery .
" We closed, you can't close in this league. You have to be consistent in all parts of the game. We struggled a lot after the first goal. We were disappointed with that.
" It's good for everyone to have Antonio back. "
good start
Conte was in the dugout after missing a visit to Manchester City last Sunday following gallbladder surgery and the Italian was pleased with his side's start.
Back-to-back league victories kept Spurs linked with the top four and Bentancur's finish from a corner 14 minutes later gave them hope of climbing to fourth.
But Mendy's bolt from the blue, his first goal for Leicester, restored the tie before a defensive error brought on Iheanacho, who let Maddison home.
Leicester City's third goal was helped by Spurs' slack defense, with Eric Dier standing beside Iheanacho to put the Nigerian past goalkeeper Fraser Foster and replacing injured captain Hugo Loris.
Harvey Barnes thought he had scored a 3-pointer in the 70th minute but saw his shot on target after another Spurs defensive lapse, ruled offside after a VAR review.
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said: " Against Tottenham they were a fantastic threat up front .
" Strong, competitive, very fluid when we had the ball and a lot of great attacking moments. It was a good day and the fans really encouraged the team. "
