Southgate disappointed England fans cheered Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire is considered unfit to defend the England national team because of his bad performance at Manchester United.

JAKARTA -- England coach Gareth Southgate has criticized fans for jeering at Harry Maguire before and during the friendly against Ivory Coast. England won 3-0 in the match at Wembley Stadium, London on Wednesday (30/3/2022) early morning WIB.

"I thought the welcome was a joke, an absolute joke," Southgate said of the jeers of some England fans when Maguire's name was read at Wembley Stadium.

"What he has done for us, the way he has performed for England, I don't understand. We are in all of this together or not," Southgate said of his support.

Maguire has endured a disappointing season at club level with Manchester United but has been a solid and reliable player for England. He helped the Three Lions reach the Euro 2020 final eight months ago.

"He's wearing the England shirt and you don't just have to support players who wear the England shirt. But when he's played at the level he has and given the performances he has for us, it's done with total commitment behind him. I don't understand it at all. The performance was quite perfect, really," said Southgate.

Jack Grealish, who set up Raheem Sterling's second England goal, reiterated Southgate's concerns. "I thought it was ridiculous," he said.

"Harry was amazing for this country at the World Cup, Euro, incredible. I thought even tonight he was brilliant. It's not nice to hear ridicule for Harry and the whole team didn't like him one bit," he said.
