Sevilla wins seventh Europa League title with penalty shootout win over Roma

Sevilla won their seventh Europa League title with a penalty shoot-out win over Roma at the Puskas Stadium on Wednesday.

There was some controversy at the end of the game as Gonzalo Montiel came on for the penalty shoot-out and needed only to score for the Spanish side after witnessing Gianluca Mancini and Ronaldo Jay Ibanez misses. Montier's poor shot, saved by Rui Patricio, appeared to give Roma a chance, but referee Anthony Taylor ruled the keeper was offside and ordered a heavy penalty, with Montier not repeating the mistake.

Both sides got off to a slow start at the start of the game, but Paulo Dybala gave Roma the lead thanks to Mancini's brilliant through-ball to quickly plug in and put the ball into the net. Sevilla had a bright spot in the second half, however, when Mancini's defense was shattered by a Jesús Navas cross, which inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to level the score.

The game became chaotic and filled with yellow cards as referee Taylor was repeatedly surrounded by players. Two second-half penalty applications were rejected by officials, keeping the score on hold and ultimately sending the game into extra time and a penalty shootout.

Sevilla goalkeeper Bono made a brilliant and crucial save late in the game to deny Andrea Belotti a chance to score. Belotti deflected the ball towards Sevilla's goal and would have claimed the win if it had gone in, but Bauno managed to save the ball and deflect it wide to keep his side in the game. The Morocco international continued to be instrumental in the penalty shoot-out, denying Mancini's shot and helping Sevilla take control.

Roma defender Roberto Mancini was brilliant at the start of the game, sending Dybala into the scoring with a superb pass. Unfortunately, however, the defender's performance took a turn for the worse and he scored the equalizer into Roma's own goal. To make matters worse, his penalty was saved by Bono, and Ibañez then hit the post, essentially ceding the victory to Sevilla.

Roma will end the Serie A season with Spezia on Sunday, while Sevilla, already qualified for next season's Champions League, face Real Sociedad in La Liga.
