OFFICIAL: Man City extend Alvarez's contract until 2028

Manchester City extended the contract of Julian Alvarez by one year on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Alvarez mainly plays as a center forward, but can also play as a second striker or right winger. He made his debut in Argentina's native River Plate when he was 19 years old, and was recruited by Manchester City for 14 million euros three years later. At the request of River Plate, Manchester City then leased Alvarez back to his home team for half a year until the lease expires in July 2022.

For Manchester City, Alvarez's main position in the team is Haaland's substitute. However, in the past 8 months, the Argentine has only started 14 times in total, but scored 10 goals and sent 3 assists for Manchester City. In this World Cup in Qatar, the player played 7 times on behalf of Argentina, scoring 4 goals and sending 1 assist, helping La Albiceleste win the championship again after 36 years.

Renewal Details

Alvarez's current contract was originally set to expire in June 2027. Through this renewal, the Sky Blues successfully kept the Argentine until 2028, and the player's salary has increased from the current weekly salary of 50,000 pounds to 100,000 pounds.

"Dedicated to doing better"

On the day of contract renewal, Alvarez's joy was beyond words. "The contract renewal is a very proud moment for me and my family," he told state media. "It's fantastic that Manchester City has put their trust in me."

"I would like to thank the manager and his team, and all the staff behind the scenes at Manchester City, for everything they have done for me since I joined in the summer. I can't ask for more. Manchester City is a club that takes care of players. There's support everywhere."

The player later vowed that he would be committed to self-improvement: "I am very satisfied with my first season at Manchester City, but I still have a lot of things to do more. I know I can be better, and Manchester City is also for me. Provided everything I needed to reach my potential."

"I'm now committed to doing better and helping City win titles."

"He is the ideal blueprint for young players"

As Alvarez's referrer, football director Txiki Begiristain also did not hesitate to praise and love the Argentine. "Julian impressed everyone at City with his technical ability, dedication and attitude," he said.

"He is the ideal blueprint for young footballers and will inspire anyone looking to break through the game. He has proven in England that he has great athleticism and a natural goal-scoring instinct."

"At the World Cup, we all saw how special he is. We were amazed at him winning the World Cup at the age of 00 and proud of what he has achieved."

"We are now fully focused on further developing his track and establishing him as one of the best strikers in world football," Begiristain concluded.
