Iceland football team part ways with coach Vidarsson

Arnar Vidalsson has resigned as Iceland national team coach , the Icelandic Football Federation ( KSI ) said on Thursday .

" We believe it is necessary and right to be guided by the interests of the team, " KSI chairman Vanda Sigurgeirsdottir said in a statement .

Iceland qualified for the Euros for the first time in 2016 , beating England 2-1 in the round of 16 before being knocked out by France in the quarter-finals.

They also qualified for the 2018 World Cup but managed just one point in the group stage, drawing against Argentina.

" Arnal has done a lot of good things at KSI and is to be commended for his work, which is usually done in challenging circumstances, " KSI added.

Vidarson , who has made more than 50 appearances for Iceland in his career , was appointed head coach in December 2020 .

Iceland beat Liechtenstein 7-0 away in Euro 2024 qualifiers after losing 3-0 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in qualifying .
